Should I Wear Hijab While Reading the Qur’an?

Question:

If I read the Qur’an in Arabic by memory, do I have to perform wudu’ (ablution) and wear hijab?

Answer:

First of all, it is always recommended to perform wudu’ (ablution) before reciting the Qur’an or making dhikr (remembrance of Allah). Also, it is not required to perform ablution if one is going to read the Qur’an by heart. In addition, it is permissible for a woman to read the Qur’an while she is menstruating or after post-children bleeding without touching the Mushaf. Touching it is permissible only for those who are in state of taharah (purification).

Regarding reading the Qur’an without covering head, Dr. Muhammad Salah says that it is not required for a woman to wear a hijab if she wants to read the Qur’an. There is no clear evidence in the Shari`ah stipulating covering the head for women before reciting the Qur’an.
