Reciting the Qur’an with Concentration
Question:
Whenever I begin to recite the Qur’an, I feel so sleepy and I hardly open my eyes. It only happens when I intend to recite the Qur’an, what could be the explanation for such case? How could I overcome it?
Answer:
Allah Almighty says in the Qur’an:
So when you recite the Qur’an, [first] seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the expelled [from His mercy]. (An-Nahl 16:98)
The majority of scholars as well as the famous reciters of the Qur’an are of the view that isti`adah (seeking refuge before recitation) is recommended. It affirms the servant’s weakness and inability to face the enemy of his inner evil, whom Allah alone, Who created this enemy, is able to repel and defeat.
Dr. Muhammad Salah first talks about the great virtues of reciting the Qur’an.
Ibn Mas`ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, “Whoever recites a letter from the Book of Allah, he will be credited with a good deed, and a good deed gets a ten-fold reward. I do not say that Alif-Lam-Mim is one letter, but Alif is a letter, Lam is a letter and Mim is a letter.” (At-Tirmidhi)
After that, Dr. Muhammad explains the plots of Shaytan (Satan) in order to gain control over the hearts of the believers and mislead them.
