Muqatta`at or abbreviated letters are the combinations of letters at the beginning of many chapters in the Qur’an. These abbreviated letters may occur alone such as Qaf, in a combination of two letters such as Ha Meem, and in a combination of three, four and five letters.
Regarding the meaning and the purpose of these abbreviated letters, scholars have differed as some of them say that they are not abbreviations but symbols and names of Allah whereas others say that they were used for rhyming.
